Get great braised Chinese barbecue flavor – plus plenty of leftovers – with the help of your slow cooker. This brisket has it all – warming spices, sweet honey and tart, flavorful tomatoes for an umami-rich sauce that’s deliciously beefy and filling.

Ingredient List

  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon Chinese 5-spice powder
  • 2 teaspoons fine sea salt or kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 2 to 3 lb fresh beef brisket flat (not corned beef)
  • 1 can (28 oz) Muir Glen™ Organic Whole Peeled Tomatoes undrained
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons fish sauce
  • 1 bulb garlic, peeled
  • 4 green onions
  • 1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro
  • 1 lime, cut into wedges
  • 8 cups cooked white rice

Preparation

  1. In small bowl, mix honey, olive oil, Chinese 5-Spice powder, salt and pepper.
  2. Spray 6-quart slow cooker with cooking spray. Place brisket in slow cooker; rub honey mixture all over brisket.
  3. In another medium bowl, mix tomatoes, soy sauce, fish sauce and garlic. Cut green onion whites into 1-inch pieces; stir into mixture. Thinly slice green onion greens on the bias; cover and refrigerate. Pour tomato mixture over brisket. Cover and cook on Low heat setting 8 to 10 hours or until meat is tender.
  4. Transfer brisket to cutting board; cool slightly. Cool liquid 10 minutes, then carefully puree in blender 30 to 90 seconds or until smooth, then return liquid to slow cooker. Set slow cooker to Warm heat setting. Shred brisket, discarding fat. Add brisket to liquid in slow cooker; stir to combine.
  5. Serve with green onion greens, cilantro, lime wedges and rice.

Tips

  • Make quick fried rice with leftover brisket and rice, plus snow peas or frozen peas, eggs and lime wedges.
  • Try serving the brisket over cauliflower rice for an extra serving of vegetables.
